Meloni in Beijing to Strengthen Bilateral Relations

“I am very pleased to be here for the first official visit of this government, which has been preceded by several high-level meetings, such as the bilateral meeting with President Xi on the sidelines of the G20 in Bali, and the missions of various Italian ministers to Beijing. This is a demonstration of the willingness to start a new phase, to relaunch our bilateral cooperation in the year that marks the twentieth anniversary of our global strategic partnership."

During the bilateral meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced the signing of a three-year action plan to explore new forms of cooperation between Italy and China, signed today.

“The Industrial Cooperation Memorandum we signed is a significant step,” which “now includes strategic industrial sectors such as electric mobility and renewable energy, sectors where China has long been operating on the technological frontier, requiring it to act as a fully developed economy, sharing with partners the new frontiers of knowledge." Meloni made this statement during her speech at the Italy-China business forum in Beijing, where six agreements were signed in various fields, from industry to food security to education.

Meloni arrived in Beijing yesterday with her daughter, Ginevra. Always by her side, the Prime Minister will travel to Paris on Thursday to attend a volleyball match at the Paris 2024 Olympics. “We have a lot of work to do, and I am convinced that this work can be helpful in such a complex global phase, and that it can also be important at the multilateral level,” Meloni added.

However, it is **time "to start a new phase, to relaunch our bilateral cooperation in the year that marks the twentieth anniversary of our global strategic partnership, but also in a year that marks another important anniversary: the 700 years since the death of Marco Polo, one of the greatest Italians and perhaps one of the most important figures in bridging the East and the West, enabling mutual understanding," the Prime Minister continued, linking Polo’s anniversary to the signing of the three-year plan.

For the Prime Minister, it is therefore "significant in this year to relaunch, with the three-year action plan, our cooperation efforts, working to build on what we have already achieved and also to experiment with new forms of collaboration."
